1. How does the representations of Christy change during the course of the film.
Representations of Christy at the beginning of the movie is seen as a burden to his family by other people and causes problems for his mother. Over time he starts to gain more independence by writing and painting on his own.It then turned into Christy being fully independent, being able to fulfill this needs himself.
- Christy being able to get married with his disability of Cerebal Pausy -
2. How do the represnetations reveal the prejudices of the times when the film was set?
The idea of themother being a homemaker and father being the breadwinner as the mother looks after the children, families not having alot of income. The idea of £800 becoming alot of money in that time and the family not able to give their full support in the disability such as not buying a wheelchair.(given a wooden barrow)
How does this text paint a different story from the movies ending?
Not represented as it should be within the movies, representation of the movie shows false idea of happiness and love (creation of a hollywood ending), allows people to feel that the ending of the movie is happy and Christy has a happy ending to his life.
However they may have purposely portrayed the idea that the carer was nice and cared for him otherwise it could take the whole aspect of him achieving successful goals for himself away from the audience as they may focus more on the idea that his wife was a prosititue and alcholic rather then a caring loving women.
How does this version of events change the representations?
These versions of events changes the ending of the story drastically making people still feel sorry for Christy and not feel he should be left as an independent person as he was treated badly by the women he married, having felt sympathy for him throughout the movie and he achieving his dream in the movie created a great ending but by having seen the true ending shows that he didnt achieve everything he may have wanted to before he died even if he loved the carer that looked after him (represented in the movie).
www some attempt to engage with the text and make some comment.
ReplyDeleteebi try to remain focussed on the reps of disability rather than veer towards other reps. Think about SHEP - what can you tell about the socio-economic context of Christy's early life? What are the historical views of Christy as disabled? WHy does the neighbour, priest and the father initially think of Christy as mentally disabled as well as physically?
