Representation of disability: The Secret Garden

The secret Garden is based on a movie where a little girl is sent to live in England with her uncle after her parents die, she gets to know a little boy she found in a room as he cries, Colin Craven her cousin was not able to walk nor stand and everyone thought he was going to die. His father didn't want to see him because he changed after his mother died. The little girl feels he is able to walk and is just being treated as a disabled child, she finds a secret garden where 'magical' things happen and takes the little boy there. He is able to walk and over comes his fear of being isolated and being locked in a room.

The movie has got aspects of disability, the little boy has arguable overcome the disability towards the end of the movie and the movie portrays the idea of people being able to come over the idea of disability.

  1. SO, does this mean that disability is seen as a negative by the society of the time? Is overcoming disability a positive?
